Medicaid is a public health insurance program that is jointly administered by the federal and state governments, helping people with limited income access affordable health care services, including doctors’ visits, hospital care, vision, dental and prescription coverage.

Medicaid covers a wide range of people, including children, pregnant individuals, working adults, individuals with limited incomes, older adults including those who are also eligible for Medicare (dual eligible), and people with disabilities.

Michigan Medicaid programs:

Medicaid is funded in part by the state government. That means several state programs exist under Medicaid. Michigan Medicaid programs include:

MIChild is a healthcare program for children under age 19. There is a $10 per family monthly cost for the program. The program is run by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and is Michigan's version of the federal Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP) provides free or low-cost health care to low-income Michigan residents between 18 and 65 years old. You may be able to join a Healthy Michigan Plan if your income is at or below 133% of the federal poverty line. Healthy Michigan Plan does not apply to people who are pregnant or people who already qualify for Medicare or another Medicaid plan.

For all Medicaid Members there are changes to retroactive coverage limits.

For adults (ages 19-64) enrolled in the Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP) there will now be six-month renewals, work requirements, and retroactive coverage limits.

For certain non-citizen immigrants, you may keep full Medicaid coverage or move to Emergency Service Only (ESO) coverage depending on your immigration status.

Many Michigan Medicaid members will not experience changes to their benefits or coverage. We will make sure that those who are impacted receive notices explaining the changes. Notices will be sent from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services based on the communication preferences they selected in MI Bridges and will be sent before any changes take effect.

Non-citizen's coverage changes start October 1, 2026.

Work requirements, retroactive coverage limits, and six-month renewals start January 1, 2027.
